Mary Ellen Austin

Mary Ellen Austin passed away on Thursday August 10, 2023. She was born in Corning, New York on September 6, 1934, to Merton and Alverta (Applegate) Rhoda. She graduated from North Side High School in Corning, NY in 1952. She worked as a secretary for Corning Glass Works until she married the love of her life, Garth Austin on June 25, 1955. She faithfully supported his 45 year career with Corning Glass Works which took them from NY to Buckhannon, WV, Louisville, KY and finally Ohio in 1973. Mary Ellen’s passion was her family. She loved flower gardening, collecting gnomes, and all animals, especially German Shepherds, wolves, and horses.
Mary Ellen will be dearly missed by all who loved her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 blissful years, Garth; in-laws Victor and Helen (Ford) Austin; siblings Merton and Loretta (nee Rhoda) Preston. She is survived by devoted children Debra Back (nee Austin), Brenda Austin, and Scott (Lisa) Austin; loving grandchildren Sarah Back, Christina (Tony) Miller, Alec and Becca Austin; cherished great-grandmother of Luca and Haley Miller; beloved brother Robert (Genie) Rhoda.
Graveside services will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 1:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to be made in Mary Ellen’s memory to the German Shepherd rescue of your choice.
