Dr. Byron Lewis Coffman
Byron Lewis Coffman, MD of Gates Mills, OH, died at Hillcrest Hospital Wednesday, August 23 after a two year battle with cancer. He was born February 1, 1948 in Denver, Colorado, to George Lewis Coffman and Victoria Ann Svetlik. He graduated with honors from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1976. A hematologist/oncologist who was a pioneer of regional oncology, he ministered to his patients with kindness, sympathy and clarity of vision. He gave of himself completely, not only to his profession and his patients, but to his family. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Madeline Coffman, by his children Sarah Coffman (Josh Goldberg), Kathy Coffman, Michael Coffman, and Rachel Coffman (Jeff Rosman), by his parents by marriage John and Mary Criscione, by his siblings by marriage, Michael and Gina Criscione, Joe and Freda Criscione, and Michael Tearce and Julie Criscione, by his nieces and nephew (Lisa, Maria and John Criscione and Khaela Tearce) and by his grandchildren, Isabella and Maxine Goldberg. His family gives thanks to the nursing staff on the step-down unit of Hillcrest Hospital for giving Byron the dignity and peace his humanity deserved during his final days. Services will be held at Church of the Resurrection, 32001 Cannon Road, Solon on Monday, August 28th at 11AM. Family willvit with friends at the church one hour prior to mass.
