Helen MacCormack Klingel nee Matthew passed February 6, 2013, following a brief illness, surrounded by her children. Formerly of Solon, Ohio, she was born on Halloween 1920.
She sailed from Scotland at age 5 with her mother to join her father in the Cleveland area, where she excelled in school, and in Scouting, earning a Golden Eaglet award. Another lifelong interest from a young age was playing the organ, which she continued at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Bentleyville. Helen was an honor student at Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University, and was elected Class President her Senior Year. Known as Scottie, she met then married Art Klingel. They moved to Solon, where they built a home and raised a family.
Both remained involved in the growing community. She is remembered for her performances at various PTA plays, and for being an enthusiastic supporter of her children's various school and sports activities.
For several years she served as Director of Christian Education at St. Martin's, and was a member of Daughters of the King. Mrs. Klingel was a substitute teacher for many years at both Solon and Warrensville High Schools; she taught briefly at Marymount, and was known by her students as by her own children to be inspiring and supportive. She was a Physical Education instructor at Warrensville High before retiring to travel with her husband. More recently, she enjoyed volunteering at Meals-On-Wheels, as well as at Hospice.
She is deeply missed by her loving husband of 70 years, Arthur, children Libby and Ken Stadler of Atlanta, Will and Carol Klingel of Lodi, John and Lins Klingel of Fairbanks, and Annie and Jim Anderson of Twinsburg. Grandchildren who survived are Jim and Sam of Fairbanks, Mary of Atlanta, Kris (Chris) of Kent, Ohio, Laura of Arizona, Becki of Pittsburgh, Erin (Mike) of Bowling Green, Emily of Lodi, Marc of Albuquerque, Paige of Fairbanks, Ed of Morgantown, WV, and Jim of Barberton. Great-grandchildren are Faith and Danielle of Atlanta, Sophie of Bowling Green, and Bryce and Shane of Wooster. Family will visit with friends at Kindrich McHugh Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon FROM 1-3 PM SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10, where memorial services will be held at 3PM.
